A Look at Water-Loving Dog Breeds

Water Loving Dog BreedsWith summer winding to a close, it seemed logical to discuss water-loving dog breeds. While the weather is still nice, these particular breeds will undoubtedly be soaking up the dog days of summer in a pool, lake, or swimming hole.

Newfoundland: If there were Olympic events for dogs, the Newfoundland would get a gold medal in swimming. Bred for water-related tasks like water rescue and hauling in fishing nets, these dogs were born to swim! They have heavy coats that protect them from cold water, and webbed feat to propel them through the water. They’re sweet, loyal, and a great addition to your family, especially if you have a pool in the backyard!

Chesapeake Bay Retriever: Often considered the toughest water retriever, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever loves water so much that they were named after the coast where the breed was developed. This breed loves being active, and their regimen should no doubt include water activities to keep them busy.

Irish Setter: Irish Setters are amazing field dogs, but many people don’t realize how much they enjoy a swim! Even though Irish Setters are excellent field dogs, they love the water. The Irish Setter is a combination of several breeds, including the Irish Water Spaniel, so it makes sense that they’re attracted to swimming and water sports!

Golden Retriever: Golden Retrievers have long been the breed that people imagine when they think about a swimming dog. They have naturally water-repellent outer coats, which makes them a perfect swimming pooch.

Irish Water Spaniel: Irish Water Spaniels are the tallest of the spaniel class, and these active and energetic dogs love to swim. Their hair resembles a perm, but it’s the tight ringlets that help repel the water. Many people use them as water-fowl hunters for this reason, coupled with their wonderful attention span and desire to please their owners.

Although we did not list them here… we have a feeling a Belgian Malinois isn’t afraid of the water either ;).
