Tips For Controlling Pet Behavior During the Holidays
The holidays are in full swing and while you and your family members are reveling in the parties, guests and presents under the tree, it could be causing undue stress on your dog. It’s totally natural for your dog to be nervous and stressed during the holiday season. There are often routine changes and commotion around your home that they’re not used to. With a little bit of effort though, you can curb them from adopting some bad behavior like making themselves comfy on the couch or being to ebullient around guests. Here are some tips to keep in mind!
Chewing: Chewing is symptomatic of anxiety or nervousness, so if you catch your dog chewing on something they’re not supposed to around the holidays, chances are, these are to blame. If you see your dog chewing on something other than their toys, make sure you audibly tell them “no” and supplement them with their own chew toys or even a food puzzle like a Kong. These activity toys are great ways to redirect bad behavior.
Barking and Jumping: Ding-dong! Guests are at the door yet again, whether it’s the mailman dropping off a package or guests arriving for a party. If your dog is barking uncontrollably or jumping up on guests when they come through the door, it’s time to change that behavior. While you won’t entirely break them of this habit overnight, a few reminders about their commands can do wonders. When someone approaches the door, have your dog sit and show them that all four paws must stay on the floor. This can help calm them down and allow you to keep the peace around the holidays at your home.
Be Organized: There are a variety of holiday items that look pleasing to the eye for both pets and humans, but many are dangerous if your dog gets a hold of them. Houseplants like poinsettias can be dangerous to both dogs and cats, as can decorations and wrapping like curled ribbons. Being organized and keeping these items out of your dog’s sight is the best way to keep your home safe this holiday season.
