New Year's Resolutions for You & Your Dog

new years resolutions for you and your dogThe beginning of a New Year is a fresh start for not only you but your pet. Our four-legged friends may have their own resolutions for 2015 and what better way to reach a goal then by doing it with your pet by your side! Below are the top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for your pet and you.

  1. Shed a few pounds together by exercising and by purchasing healthier foods. Keep a closer eye on how much food you pour into their bowl. Start by reading the guidelines on the bag to see how much your pup really needs. By using an 8-ounce measuring cup, you can offer them the exact amount of calories they need.
  2. Choose a specific diet for your dog, one that fits his or her health requirements. Our dog’s diets can differ depending on age, energy and nutrient requirements.
  3. Relieve your cabin fever and get out of the house with your pup. Find new, fun ways for exercise like hiking, jogging, doga, swimming and more. Try and find groups that exercise with their dog daily. Your pet will enjoy the physical activity and the bonding time with you.
  4. Visit your veterinarian for their yearly examination. Now is the perfect time to ask for advice about pet food, eating habits, behavioral issues and health risks. Also, this examination will check for medical conditions that are much easier to take care of when detected early.
  5. Brush your pups coat everyday. It reduces the chance of them shedding all over your furniture and keeps their coat healthy.
  6. Brush your pups teeth everyday. This way you won’t have as much plaque built up and bad breath. Remember to use a tooth brush and toothpaste made specially for dogs. Regular cleanings by your veterinarian is the best way to keep them in shape.
  7. Teach your pup a new trick! Its important to keep your dogs brain active and healthy. New tricks will increase their mental stimulation. Try out toys that will force your pet to think until he or she has received the treat in the middle.
  8. Update your pups Pet ID information. A lot can change in one year, so don’t wait until your pet gets lost, update their tags incase they need to find their way home.
  9. If there is anything you think your dog needs to work on, then it is time to resolve it. Give them lessons on begging less, barking less, biting, scratching or holding it. There is no better time to improve as a pet.
  10. Have you been thinking about adding a new furry family member? Before commiting, try temporarily fostering a pet. A lot of animal shelters offer these arrangements so dogs have a safe living environment while they wait for that special owner. You will be a loving host while testing out how another animal would fit into your life.
